About hospital bypass

Hospital bypass aims to ensure the safety and quality of care in emergency department patients. Hospital bypass involves the diversion of some ambulances coming to the hospital to another nearby hospital.

About Hospital Early Warning System

A period of HEWS (Hospital Early Warning System) occurs when a hospital asks Ambulance Victoria to redirect ambulances with patients with less urgent conditions, patients who haven’t been to the hospital before and ambulances not already on their way.

All major hospitals have a HEWS plan. HEWS activities are a whole-of-hospital approach to avoiding bypass. They involve doctors, nurses and managers throughout the hospital.

HEWS usually occurs when the emergency department is nearly full and aims to prevent bypass being necessary. It provides a brief period (usually 1 hour).

Hospitals can request HEWS a maximum of two times in succession. Generally, no more than two nearby hospitals can request HEWS at the same time.
